His Word Is Life
“It’s alive! It’s alive!” shouted the short term missionary to a group of gathering Muslims. As the crowd approached the preacher, he lifted the cloth covering his Bible. He exclaimed to the group around him, “The Word of God is alive!”
Let the words of that preacher sink into your heart: “THE WORD OF GOD IS ALIVE!” This is what makes daily Bible reading so vital and valuable to our lives. It is God’s living word to us today. Notice what the author of Hebrews says about the Word of God:
Hebrews 4:12 – “For the Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” KJV
The Amplified version of the above verse puts it this way: “For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective]…”
When Moses was about to die he told the Israelites (concerning the Law of God), “For it is not a vain thing for you; because it is your life…” (Deuteronomy 32:47) Did you see that? He called the law of God (for them, the Word of God) their life! He was showing them, even in the Old Testament, that the only way for them to survive in the Promised Land was to follow what God had said. His Word, if followed, would bring blessings and victories and successes that they would be allowed to enjoy for generations. But if they did not follow His Word they would forfeit the life that obedience would have brought them.
His Word is living. His Word is life. What does that mean for us?
When I was a teenager I was seeking to be filled with the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues. I had been saved for about three years, but I had not had the blessed experience of being filled yet. Struggling with this fact, I began reading my Bible in need of a promise from the Lord that my seeking was not in vain. I was reading Jeremiah 29, and it hit me like a ton of bricks. Jeremiah 29:13 says, “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.” That verse has been something I have gone back to over and over again in my life.
The Author of the Bible is the One Who knows the hearts of men and women like no other. Jesus even told us in Matthew that the Father knows how many hairs are on our heads and that He knows what we have need of. What I am getting at is this: God know what you need to get through what you are going through, and His Word has the answers. When people ask me how to know God’s voice my first thought is always this: Read His Word and you will hear His voice.
His Word is alive! His Word is life! His Word can speak just what you need to hear; but you have to open the Book. In His Book you will find history and poetry, action and mystery, doctrine and teaching, romance and love. Most importantly you will find life. Make it a point to be a daily student of His Word. You won’t regret it.
